Among the top reasons our guests visit are the stunning views, interesting wildlife, and thousands of miles for adventuring. The ATV Trails in the Black Hills are the perfect place to experience it all! That’s why we asked our resident expert, Shane, to share his favorites.
Q: What’s the best way to navigate the ATV Trails in the Black Hills?
“Before revving up your engine, be sure to download a navigation app or find a reliable map. The ATV Trails in the Black Hills are a maze if you’re new to the area. Personally, I highly recommend the Avenza app. It has the most up to date maps and will give you real time updates of where you are on the map.”
Q: Next up, what are your favorite areas?
“First, I usually recommend the Galena and Rochford area. These are ghost towns of the Black Hills with tons of history to see along the way. Also, don’t miss Vinegar Cemetery, the Chinese Walls, and the Mini Grand Canyon near Galena. Additionally, when you pass through Rochford, there’s food and drinks at the Moonshine Gulch Saloon, commonly known as the Rochford Bar. Plus, on Sunday’s they have a jam with local musicians. Actually, you might even catch Kia playing.”
Q: Why are the Black Hills a good place for this?
“It’s a combination of factors from the diverse terrain of forested hills, meandering streams, and expansive meadows to the well-maintained trail system that caters to riders of all skill levels. Moreover, the region’s rich history and abundance of recreational opportunities make it a perfect destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Additionally, the Black Hills have something like 50 residents per square mile, meaning there’s plenty of open miles for off-roading.”
Q: Can you rent an ATV in the area? Where?
“Yes, you can rental them all over from the Lead / Deadwood area down to Custer. However, they sell out quickly during peak seasons so it’s best to reserve them in advance.”
Q: Any safety considerations for the ATV Trails in the Black Hills?
“While ATVing is undeniably thrilling, safety should always be a top priority. Also be sure to wear appropriate safety gear including helmets, goggles, and sturdy footwear. Lastly, familiarize yourself with local regulations and trail etiquette, and always ride responsibly.”
Q: Finally, are there any age limits? Should parents come with?
“Actually, age limits vary per rental company. However, it’s generally advisable for riders under 16 to be accompanied by a parent. Additionally, it’s best to assess your child’s maturity and riding ability before allowing them to operate an ATV.”
