While not technically in the Black Hills, the Badlands are a welcome neighbor worth visiting. Experience another world of colors and textures! That’s what makes this a popular destination for family photos, so be sure to grab your camera. Also, there are some great hikes throughout the Badlands.

Fresh produce is hitting its stride with flavorful tomatoes, watermelon, cucumber and more garden offerings each week. With farmers markets happening all across the Black Hills, you’ll want to look up the one closest to you.
Do the Touristy Stuff
They’re classics for a reason. From Mount Rushmore to Crazy Horse, these excursions are worth seeing in person. Along with the monuments, we also enjoy the mining tours near Deadwood, underground cave tours, Cosmos Mystery Area, and the homemade donuts at Wall Drug. Also consider an aerial tour with Black Hills Aerial Adventures or Black Hills Balloons.
Take a Drive in the Black Hills in August
While it’s hard to get bored in the hills, it can be fun to venture into a new area. Spearfish Canyon is just a short drive from the Deadwood area and offers incredible views. Or, if you’re in Hill City or Custer, Custer State Park is a great place to spend some time exploring.

Live Music in the Black Hills in August
Wherever you stay, there’s likely to be some music happening in the area. However, many cities dedicate a night each week and close off their downtown area to bring the community together. Basically, it’s Music on Main in Sturgis on Wednesday nights, Downtown Summer Nights in Rapid City on Thursdays, and Downtown Friday Nights in Spearfish. Also, Deadwood’s Outlaw Square has something happening almost every weekend.
When you aren’t downtown for the music, be sure to check out the great bands in the area. In fact, it’s worth keeping an eye on the lineups at The Monument in Rapid City, The Deadwood Mountain Grand, Saloon #10 in Deadwood, and The Custer Beacon.
