Nature puts on a show for the Black Hills in September! Autumn colors line the skyline, the weather is comfortable and predictable, traffic is calm, and the trails are quiet. We’ve said it before, September the best month of the year in the Black Hills! Plus, our cabins enter offseason pricing, offering the full experience at a great rate. In this article, we’ll cover what to pack and experience during this transitional month.
How’s the Weather in the Black Hills in September?
September brings a mix of temperatures, so it’s best to pack layers to accommodate varying conditions. While sandals are still a good choice, it’s also smart to pack warmer footwear for outdoor activities. Also consider clothing like long-sleeved shirts, light jackets or sweaters for cooler evenings, and comfortable pants. Snow is unlikely, though we’ve seen frost in the higher elevations like Silver City.
Also, the higher elevation can cause elevation sickness in some people, so we recommend scheduling some R&R for your first day here and drinking lots of water.

What is there to do in the Black Hills in September?
Stratobowl Launch
Each September, we wake up before sunrise and head to the Stratobowl to watch the Hot Air Balloons launch. While it’s not an organized event, hundreds of people come out to watch. However, the balloons can only launch under optimal conditions, so it’s not a guaranteed show.
Go to the Badlands
While not technically in the Black Hills, the Badlands are a welcome neighbor worth visiting. Experience another world of colors and textures! That’s what makes this a popular destination for family photos, so be sure to grab your camera.
Educational Tours
Learn the history of our region through the many guided tours available. The area’s underground caves are a staple, along with Deadwood’s guided tours and mining tours. There are even helicopter tours available for a Bird’s Eye view of the hills through Black Hills Aerial Adventures.
Take a Drive
As you wind through the scenic routes of Spearfish Canyon or Needles Highway, each turn reveals a new breathtaking view. Reds, oranges, and yellows paint the hillsides amongst the granite and limestone hillsides. The air is crisp, the sun is shining, and the changing leaves are the main event.
Hit the Trails
Finally, it’s a great month to pick a challenging hike off the beaten path. You’ll have lots of daylight but cooler temperatures. When you get to your destination, the changing leaves will make for an incredible photo op. Here are our favorite hiking trails >>
