Sleepy, charming Hill City was once a hot spot in the Black Hills! It was the second city to be settled, after Custer, where South Dakota’s gold rush began. It’s about to become a major destination once again with some serious upgrades coming through 2024. We’re talking new dining, drinking, live music, and some truly unbelievable vacation rentals. You heard it here first. Hill City’s on the come up! Here’s what we know so far.
Come one, come all, come hungry.
Along with classics like Black Hills Bistro, Chute Rooster, The Bumping Buffalo, and the beloved Alpine Inn, there are great new restaurants coming all along Main Street. Watch for the 1885 Steakhouse slinging out great steaks and service – these owners are the best. One of our favorite breweries, Lost Cabin, is also moving to town.
Concerts are coming to Hill City.
An outdoor live music venue is breaking ground in the heart of the hills! We’ve caught a quick glimpse of the floor plans and this will be something special. It’s a big space for big bands and big crowds in a beautiful place. The Black Hills are a melting pot of incredible musicians, world-class talent, and Hill City’s a great place to take in a show.
Hill City is a central hub.
Many visitors to the Black Hills have a hard time choosing between the adventure-filled Southern Hills and the nightlife-packed Northern Hills. Hill City is the sweet spot in the middle, less than an hour from anywhere you want to go. It’s worth exploring the town itself, too, and the rich mining history that founded this historic haven.
There’s a ban on vacation rentals.
Last year, the Hill City Council voted to outlaw all future vacation rentals, excluding the ones already in place. Don’t get us started on this, ha! However, we’re lucky to manage three truly amazing vacation rentals in Hill City that aren’t going anywhere. These include Modern on Main – a gorgeous modern home with a hot tub, House on the Hill – an upscale Bed & Breakfast with a view, and Spring Creek Hilltop Getaway, a large resort on the edge of Hill City with a private stream for trout fishing.
We plan to spend a lot of time in Hill City this summer. We hope to see you there!
