Preparation

You don’t need much gear for the kayaking! Safety is the top priority, so you need to have a life jacket. The good idea is to prepare a dry bag or zip lock bag, they will help to protect the phone and other belongings from the water. Clothing should be waterproof or quick-dry. Don’t forget about sun protection as water reflects the sun, so there is a risk of sunburn. Also, pack enough water and snacks!

Kayaking tips

If you are a beginner, you can start on calm water – lakes are the optimal environment to practice. Rivers can have strong currents, so they require additional kayaking skills. During early mornings and evenings, water is usually calmer than during the daytime.

Don’t go kayaking if the weather is windy as it could be unsafe. Check the forecast in advance! It’s important to stay near the shore, in case of unexpected weather changes and for safety reasons. During the spring the weather could be especially unpredictable.

Spend some time before the kayaking journey to practice how to get back into a kayak from the water.

Kayaking techniques

Kayaking techniques are easy and intuitive! For the forward stroke, you should dip the paddle in the water and make the movement to the back. Backward stroke is the same movement but to the front. To turn left, place the paddle on the right side of the kayak and make a wide arc away from the kayak. To turn right, do the opposite. That’s it!
